Summary of 2005 Asia Business Conference at Harvard (1)
- Adding Value in Asia: From Outsourcing to Innovation
Hope this helps those who can’t make this event. And any comment is welcomed!
Overall impression: 70; Without Yi Bo Shao, Andy Yan, William Henessey, it’s not worth to travel there if you’re not living close to Boston.
Organization: 70; 50% of meetings are delayed; more than 60% of speakers are not well-prepared; some keynote speakers don’t even have slides
Weather: 30; too cold, 30 degree; suggest to hold conference in spring or autumn
Facility: Almost new, but reception, main auditorium, and discussion are spread out in three building; it’s too cold and inconvenient to walk
Attendees: 400+ from Harvard Business/Law School, Kennedy School of Government, Undergraduates, local U. and all of the nation
Food: 40; Terrible cold brown bag lunch
Keynote Speech 1: Peter Weedfald, SVP of Samsung USA: 85
Notes: Peter is excellent at engaging audience and showing cool products so I call his speech at an entertainment; the brand value of Samsung is ranked no. 21 worldwide, right next to Sony; profit jumped from $5B to $10B in the last year; they will spend $6B this year in R&D, almost double previous year’s; Show room is build in NY square; I suggest to long Samsung stock
Discussion Panel: VC and Entrepreneurship; 95
Yi Bo Shao: 100; shares his opinion unselfishly; talks down to earth; has great sense of humor, more than 10 times of applause in over-occupied room; money and business opportunities are not real issues for returnees, the challenge is to find right partner; he first met his wife in the same conference 5 years ago
Notes:
Andy Yan from Softbank: 95; ROI in Shanda is 10 times; now leaves Softbank and invest in media technology in mobiles, want to try pharmaceutical industry if there’s another choice; When confronting the copyright challenge, he responds: foreigners should pay for Chinese' copyright of paper and explosives; As soon as you have great team and convincing business plan, VC doesn’t care whether you have Harvard degree or not, MBA or not, oversees degree or not.
(To be continue...)
