BLACKSBURG, Va., January 22, 2009 -- Virginia Tech Police have confirmed the name of the female graduate student murdered yesterday evening in the university's Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown.
She was Xin Yang, a 22-year-old graduate student from Beijing, China. She had just arrived at Virginia Tech Jan. 8 to begin her studies in accounting in the Pamplin College of Business. She was a resident of the Graduate Life Center.

The victim's mother, who is in China, was notified last night via telephone.
University leadership remains concerned about the welfare of the university student community, and particularly the community of Chinese Scholars. The university has counselors on the scene at the Graduate Life Center to assist students, staff, faculty, or others who seek assistance.
The crime scene is secured, but Graduate Life Center residents are free to come and go. Police interviewed several witnesses and are providing counseling support and assistance.
Reaction from Virginia Tech Students
Do students feel safe on Virginia Tech's campus?
The students and faculty News7 spoke with all say yes.
An alert reached 60,000 people within half an hour of the murder, telling students to stay away from the Graduate Life Center.
But those in a classroom at the time, including freshman Daniel Reynolds, were to first to see the message displayed on a screen on the wall.
"It was kinda freaky just to think about it, but it wasn't that bad... no one was freaking out or wanting to get out of htere and go shut themselves in their rooms," says Reynolds. "We just kinda hung out there."
The University says it is concerned about the welfare of its community. It has set up counselors at the Graduate Life Center to help students, staff and faculty.

Twenty-five-year-old Haiyang Zhu of China is charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
Virginia Tech Police responded Wednesday just after 7 p.m. to the Graduate Life Center when a 911 call came in about a student being assaulted inside the first floor cafe.
Police say a female graduate student was found dead of stab wounds.
Officers say the victim and suspect are both international graduate students, and it appears they knew each other.
Investigators recovered the knife at the scene and we're told the suspect was arrested without incident.
Within 40 minutes of the murder, Virginia Tech sent out 40,000 messages alerting the campus of what happened.
Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said, "We notified the campus community that there was a murder and a suspect was in custody. About 40 minutes later we sent out another message basically releasing people because the first message told them to stay put."
As police responded to the stabbing, they received another 911 call about shots fired inside Squires Student Center. That report turned out to be false.
Letter from President Steger to the campus community
By Charles W. Steger
BLACKSBURG, Va., January 22, 2009 -- To the campus community: Our university community was shocked by a brutal murder Wednesday night at the Graduate Life Center.
The suspect is in custody and the nature of the incident points to an isolated, very personal tragedy. Our hearts go out to the victim and her family. An act of violence like this one brings back memories of the April 16 tragedy and I have no doubt that many of us feel especially distraught.
Once again we are challenged as a community to offer support to one another as we process this recent event. Once again we will rise to the occasion.
We encourage students to take full advantage of counseling services at the Cook Counseling Center (231-6557) and we are providing onsite counseling to faculty, staff, and students at the Graduate Life Center in Room B. The Dean of Students Office can also provide assistance to students (231-3787).
The campus will remain open and classes will be held on the regular schedule. We will keep you informed about services or other memorials after we have a chance to learn of the family s plans and wishes. At times like this we are reminded how important friends and family are during a tragedy. We will continue to do everything we can to support the Virginia Tech family.
President Charles W. Steger
