To have back bones to your boss is a good principle, but it does not equal arrogance. You can always show you back bone in a pleasant way. Why not treat you boss and subordinates equally nice? Were you trying to overcome a Chinese cultural tendency to show excessive humbleness and obedience to authority?
Like the old saying, you are as good as your options are. In your case, you seemed to be in a position that you could cherry pick your employer. But what if you didn’t have a job then and desperately needed money to pay your rent? I bet you would accept the offer in ecstasy. Principle works well in the long run. In reality, there are always situations we need to adjust our tactics and behaviors. I hope people here do not take you principle literally. We all need to survive first.
