Nicolas Sarkozy /niko’la saʁko’zi/ pronunciation (help·info) (born Nicolas Paul Stéphane Sarközy de Nagy-Bocsa on 28 January 1955 in Paris, France) is the newly elected President of France. He is often nicknamed Sarko by both his French supporters and opponents.

After 2 rounds of voting, Sarkozy has been elected to the Presidency of the Republic in the 2007 election runoff vote, held on May 6. He will succeed Jacques Chirac as President on May 16.

Until March 26, 2007, he served as the Minister of the Interior of France.

A controversial figure in France, he is known for his tough stance on law and order, and his admiration for a new economic model for France, suggesting that the country should have a more liberalised economy. Critics have accused him of being an authoritarian demagogue, ready to trade away civil liberties for political gains.
